How To Use
Five minutes, a soft cloth and a little patience. Always test a small, hidden spot first.
You'll need
- Hagerty Silversmiths' Polish (in every set)
- Two soft, clean cloths: one to polish, one to buff
- Cotton swabs or a very soft brush for chains and detail
- Cotton gloves (Heirloom Collection) to keep fingerprints off
1. Prepare the piece
Remove dust and skin oils with a dry cloth. Take off anything you shouldn't polish, such as pearls or soft stones, or plan to work around them.
2. Apply to the cloth, not the piece
Shake the bottle and put a small amount of polish on your cloth. Keep it away from stones, settings and anything glued.
3. Rub gently, in straight lines
Use light back-and-forth strokes rather than circles. Turn to a clean part of the cloth as it turns black; that's the tarnish coming off. Use a cotton swab for chain links, engraving and around settings.
4. Leave the dark details dark
Many old pieces have deliberately darkened recesses that give them depth. Polish the raised surfaces and leave the recesses alone.
5. Buff & store
Buff with a clean, dry cloth until bright. Store in a closed box or pouch with an anti-tarnish strip, away from rubber bands, wool and household cleaners.
Stuck?
Email us a photo of the piece in daylight and we'll tell you how to treat it. Photo advice is included with every set.
